and yet he can't tame his temper, starts fights he knows he can't win, admits to his own jealousy which pushes him to make practically suicidal decisions, and just makes overall stupid decisions which are so fun and horrible to follow. On some level, he's a genius - he's kept himself alive based on an enhanced sense of survival, he knows a thing or two about the world, and he has an incredible set of skills. He's not real in that I relate to him - I would be dead if I had to relate to him, considering what he's gone through. It's a rollercoaster of a book, but through it all, Neil Josten remains one of the most interesting and real characters I have ever read. They're all rough around the edges, and drama is very VERY much present.įrom here, there is a wild journey including Neil's clashing with the pint-sized, uber-talented, and manic goalkeeper Andrew Minyard, the introduction of a literal Japanese yakuza gang, and a murder. The Foxes are a team of trouble-making misfits specifically recruited to give them a "second chance" and as such, they don't get along. All of this happens prior to the beginning of the book, at which point he gets recruited to the Palmetto State Foxes - the worst collegiate Exy team in existence.

After his mom is killed and he's forced to burn her body and bury her bones on the beach, he sets off with a new identity and begins playing Exy (a made up sport which is a very violent cross between lacrosse and ice hockey).

Neil Josten is the runaway son of a notorious serial killer called the Butcher. I know that's a huge statement to make, but I make it quite easily. With that out of the way, let me get into why I love this book (and series) so much.įirst, there is no better protagonist than Neil Josten.

As such, even though I have a fantastic time reading it and love it very much, I just don't want to promote it as a 5 star book. But I also know that some of the difficult topics in this book seem to be played up for the drama of it all, and there are certain words used throughout the stories which are typically regarded as offensive words (negative language surrounding mental illness and impairment, and slurs towards gay characters from some of the more peripheral characters).

However, I rate this series four stars because there are so many trigger warnings (I've listed many of them after the first divider) I have a hard time recommending it as 5 stars in good conscience.ĭon't get me wrong, I don't believe that books should be "banned" - I don't think that having a lot of trigger warnings present is inherently bad, or that it diminishes the value of the book. No matter how often I reread it, I get just as excited as the first time, and I spend a lot of time in the AftG fandom on Tumblr because I love these characters so much. The truth is that the All for the Game trilogy is probably one of my absolute favorite series. That being said, I also always leave my rating for this series at 4 stars.

Heavily swayed by the fact that I have read this book (and series) 4 times and loved it every time.

There's a reason for this, and the reason is that I am addicted to this series. So, I have to first preface this review by saying: I have read this book 4 times now.
